Observation Narrative
The plot captures mixed oak forest vegetation on the upper convex slope of a steep bluff fronting the Potomac River. Soils are shallow and rocky. Although the geology is mapped as "amphibolite," there is little indication of fertility, and soils samples collected are distinctly acidic and low in base status. Large Quercus montana and Quercus rubra dominate the overstory, with Acer rubrum, Acer saccharum, Fagus grandifolia, Betula lenta, and Ostrya virginiana comprising most of the sub-canopy layers. This plot has rather high woody diversity, especially in the shrub layer. The herb layer is also quite diverse, given the site conditions, with mixed patch-dominance by Eurybia divaricata, Polypodium virginianum, Aralia nudicaulis, Polystichum acrostichoides, and Dryopteris marginalis.
